Ngā Pou a Tāne is excited to celebrate at this event the launch of the National Māori Forestry Strategy (which took place in May this year) and introduce five new transition pathways for the forestry on our lands - the action plans that we are developing for:
Carbon options for whenua Māori
Vertical integration for Māori forestry
Māori forestry leadership
Native forests
Certification of Indigenous Practice Forests (IPF)
For the first time ever we will recognise the efforts of a Māori forestry individual, organisation or partnership with Ngahere Māori Awards:
He Rākau Taumatua Mana Māori Leadership Award $7,500 (sponsored by Ngā Pou a Tāne & Nelson Consulting Group)
Te Mana o te Wao Tapu Nui a Tāne Resilience Award $8,500 (sponsored by Sequal Lumber)
Ngahere Tauwhirowhiro - Transition Forests Award $10,000 (sponsored by Nateva)
Spread over 2 days the event will kick off with a pohiri on Thu 20th at 11am at Te Puia, followed by a young foresters forum, friendly golf game. Black tie awards over a hangi buffet with geyser-lights and special entertainment kicks off at 6pm. The following day starts off at 9am at the Bioeconomy Science Institute, 49 Sala Street - with keynote speaker Nathalie Whitaker (founder of Give-a-Little, Trees that Count and Toha). This is followed by the Māori Forestry Strategy Steering Group presentations on five transitional pathways for Māori forestry to 2040, a panel discussion, and Māori Forestry Research Symposium.
If you’ve been stuck on what to do with the forests on your land, or you’re excited to be in forestry, or somewhere in between - this summit is for you.
